A Level company - serving Evanston, IL

Famco Fireplace Services Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

How Famco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them

  • Famco FV36 and FV42 direct-vent gas fireplaces - failed ignition modules. These units use a SIT 820 Nova millivolt system that quits when the thermopile drops below 325 mV. We see this constantly in Evanston’s lakefront historic district, where the wind-driven downdraft works the pilot overtime. We test millivoltage under load, replace the thermopile if it’s marginal, and only swap the full valve assembly if the coil resistance reads out of spec. No guessing.
  • Famco wood-burning inserts - cracked refractory panels. The 36 Elite and 44 Elite models ship with 1-inch refractory cement panels that spider-crack after three to five seasons of thermal cycling. The factory panels are $340-$480 per set; we also source HeatShield-compatible refractory replacement panels through our Haven buying network when the firebox geometry allows. We photograph every crack under NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection before quoting replacement.
  • Famco chimney-top dampers - seized cables and corroded caps. The Famco TC dampers with stainless cable drive corrode at the swivel joint where Evanston’s freeze-thaw cycles trap moisture. The cable frays, the cap jams half-open, and you get a cold chimney all winter. We can sometimes free and lube the mechanism, but when the cable’s kinked, we replace with a Gelco cap-damper assembly or switch to a top-sealing Lyemance if the flue tile is sound.
  • Famco gas log sets - degraded ember beds and clogged burner ports. The G18 and G24 vented log sets use a dual-tube stainless burner that silts up with silica from Evanston’s lake-effect dust. Owners smell gas, see lazy yellow flames, and assume the valve’s failing. Usually it’s just clogged primary air ports. We pull the logs, ultrasonic-clean the burner, replace the ember material with OEM Famco wool or Copperfield vermiculite, and pressure-test before relight.
  • Famco B-vent gas fireplaces - condensate damage to the firebox floor. The BVC series was sold heavily in 2015-2019 Evanston new construction with undersized vent runs. Flue gases cool before exit, condensate runs back, and the galvanized firebox pan rusts through from underneath. We find this with the camera - the rust doesn’t show until it’s perforated. Repair means pan replacement or full unit swap; we’ll show you the footage and give you both prices.

Our Famco Fireplace Services Process

Our Famco Fireplace Services Process
  1. 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers, 24/7. We ask the model number if you have it, the symptom, and whether the unit’s been serviced before. We book a 2-hour arrival window.
  2. 2
NFPA 211 Level 2 inspection on arrival. Corrine or one of our techs runs the camera down the flue, checks gas pressure at the manifold, and documents everything - photos, readings, model and serial numbers. Clause 4 of the Haven Standard requires this photo record on every job.
  3. 3
Written price, written scope, written warranty. Before any wrench turns, you get a single-page quote with line items: parts, labor, tax, total. If we recommend OEM Famco parts versus quality aftermarket, we explain the trade-off in writing.
  4. 4
Repair with named parts. We source Famco components through our Haven buying network, or DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, or Copperfield equivalents when they’re the better fit. The tech on your job is the tech who diagnosed it - no handoffs.
  5. 5
Test and document. Gas units get combustion analysis: CO in ambient air, flue temperature, draft pressure. Wood units get a smoke-pencil draft test. You receive the photo record, the readings, and the signed warranty before we leave.
  6. 6
365-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not done right, we make it right. The promise is stamped on every job, no claim forms needed.

Why Evanston Homeowners Call Level Two Chimney Evanston for Famco Work

Why Evanston Homeowners Call Level Two Chimney Evanston for Famco Work

We’ve inspected and cleaned more than 38,000 chimneys since 2009, and a healthy slice of those have been Famco units in Evanston’s 60201, 60202, and lakefront zip codes. Corrine Halstead and our crew know the difference between an FV36 ignition fault and a BVC condensate failure before we unpack the truck - and we prove it with the camera footage, not a sales pitch.

Our techs are background-checked, uniformed, and named on your appointment. You get a text when we’re on the way. The materials we use come through our Haven buying network: DuraFlex liners, HeatShield resurfacing, Gelco caps, and Famco or Copperfield factory parts when OEM is the right call. Every job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise and the documented photo record required by Clause 4 of the Haven Standard.

The camera doesn’t negotiate - and neither does creosote. But an honest price and a clear photo of what’s actually wrong will save you from both.
